Open communication is essential for success in marital life. Whatever is said should be taken in the right spirit by both the partners. Nothing that is said should be taken as a personal affront. Because when we do that we are playing into the hands of the devil, and paving the way for marital discord. Love and understanding should be the basis of marital relationship, and that should be what governs all mutual interactions.

There is no one who understands us like Jesus. To fully understand us, He became like one of us. We too should try to understand one another. It can only be done by stepping into the other person’s shoes, by being able to look at things from the other person’s perspective, and by understanding the compulsions that he or she is under. This is especially important in marital life. God created Adam and Eve not as isolated individuals, but as forefathers of generations to come. Every married couple is in the same position as Adam and Eve. They are intended to be the forebears of an endless progeny.

Pope John Paul II suffered a near fatal attack at the hands of an assassin, the consequences of which he would have to bear till the end of his life. Yet, as a true follower of Christ, John Paul broke all protocol, turned a deaf ear to all advise against it, and went to meet his assailant in prison, held him close, called him ‘brother’ and forgave him. There is a lot of hurt that each one of us carries within us – hurt caused by others’ tarts and taunts, bruises caused by bad experiences in the past. We should learn to forgive them like John Paul did; like Christ did hanging from that cross on Calvary. For when we forgive, we will be healed.

Deep in our hearts, we all have feelings of guilt – guilt about the way we are, guilt about things we have done, guilt about our failings and shortcomings. When Adam ate the fruit of the forbidden tree, he knew he had committed a sin, and went into hiding. Like Adam we tend to cover up our failures, because deep within us there is a yearning to be accepted. Jesus takes the guilt away from us and sets us free. All we need to do is turn away from sin and accept him.

‘The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field’ (Mat 13:44). ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it’ (Mat 13:46). Jesus is the treasure hidden in the field, the pearl of great value. If we search for him, we will find him. And when we find him, we should set aside everything else we have and accept him with our whole heart. He should become the focal point of our lives.

We are all weighed down by burdens, the burden of sin, the burden of sadness, the burden of bad habits, the burden of anger and hatred. We need to turn to Jesus because he will relieve us of our burdens. The Bible says: If the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed (John 8:36). Turn to Jesus, and he will reveal himself to us. He will set us free.

People often ask why the church is needed, wouldn’t believing in Jesus and following his commandments be enough. We should remember as Christians we are not only believers in Christ, we are also a community of believers. It is Jesus himself who established the church, Jesus who established the authority that the church has.

We need to make a firm and radical decision to walk away from sinful ways. We are opening the doors to Satan every time we indulge in little misdemeanors. Once he is in, he will manipulate our thoughts, and little by little, he will lead us astray. We need to turn to Jesus and let him take charge of our lives.

We are all missionaries. We have a mission that was entrusted upon us by Jesus, and that mission is to spread his message, the message of peace, the message of joy, the message of love. We are the salt of the earth. We are the light of the world. There is so much darkness in the world around us. It is our mission to dispel the darkness in the hearts of people about us, bring joy to their lives, and lead them along the path of righteousness.

What are we here on earth for? There must be a purpose for our lives. That purpose is not to become rich and famous. We are children of God, citizens of heaven. The purpose of our lives is to bear witness to Christ, to deliver his message to the masses, the message of love. Jesus is love incarnate, and as Christians we should make that love our lifestyle.

‘If God is with us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will he not also give us all things with him?’ (Romans 8:32-33). God is there for us at all times. He will stand by us in our hour of need. He will give us the power to overcome all adversities. Let us trust in him and live by his commandments.

We are here because God the Father has brought us here; and he has brought us here to reveal his plans for us, plans that will manifest the glory of God. There are a lot of things that have happened in our lives that we have not understood, and that is because we do not know God’s plans for us. The Holy Spirit will enlighten us and reveal them to us. All we need to do is to wait upon him.

In this 25 minute exhortation, Fr. George speaks about marital relationship. Wives should respect their husbands, because the husband is the head of the family. But husbands should be aware that if the husband is the head of the family, the wife is the body that supports the head. Neither is of any use without the other. Neither one can fulfill the duties incumbent on them under the sacrament of matrimony unless and until they accept this reality. Wives should make a conscious effort to uphold their husbands, and husbands should make a conscious and continuous effort to make sure their wives feel they are loved.

Unless you are born again, you will not enter into heaven. To be born again, you need a body, and that body is the body of Christ that is delivered to us through the Holy Eucharist. We now have two bodies: one that we were born with, and the other that was delivered to us by Christ. Our memory, which encompasses the experiences we have had in life, is inseparable from our bodies. The way we act is based on the way we think, and that in turn is based on what our body has experienced in life. Only when we receive a new body, the body of Christ; only when we experience Christ, can we change the way we think, the way we act, the way we are.

Continuing from the previous episode, Fr. Panackal speaks about accepting the body of Christ and being born again. The altar is where the transformation of the body takes place, where through the Holy Eucharist, we accept the body of Christ. That body will help erase all the pain, anguish, anger and hatred that was associated with our earthly bodies. The body of Christ will erase memories that have been troubling our hearts, and we will be able to live better lives.

Most of us carry within us memories of hurts inflicted on us in our childhood by others. These memories foment the feelings of hurt, leading us to close the doors to our hearts and shut ourselves in. But Jesus is knocking at our door with the promise of a new life, a new beginning. If only we open up to him, he can heal all our woes, ease all our pain and calm our troubled hearts. Let us listen to his voice and heed his words. Peace and happiness will be ours, for now and forever.

Christ’s dying prayer on the Cross was: ‘Lord, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing’. All of us who have been hurt by others should likewise be able to forgive those who have hurt us, bless them, and pray for their well being. We will then find true relief from our pain; the hurt will disappear; and we will begin to enjoy true peace of mind.

We should turn our minds away from thoughts that make us anxious, sad or desperate. The God who has power over the things that make us anxious, sad or desperate – that God is with us. All we need to do is truly believe in Him, and place before Him everything that makes us anxious, sad or desperate. We will find peace of mind. Nothing will trouble us anymore.

Why me? That was what Job asked God in the middle of his sufferings. Like Job we tend to ask the same question. But we should realize we are not alone in our sufferings. Jesus is with us every bit of the way, in our pain, in our anguish, in our distress, in our sorrows. Acceptance is the key. Like Job, we should accept our suffering and offer it to God. Sadness is the working of the devil. With Jesus by our side, joy eternal is ours. Our prime responsibility to ourselves is to keep our minds in peace. It is the presence of God within us that brings peace of mind.

In this episode, Fr. George Panackal says parents are the people to continue Christ’s mission. His mission was threefold: that of a priest, that of a prophet and that of a king. A priest is the person who performs divine rites at the altar. Likewise, parents are priests who perform the divine sacrifice at the family altar. There is an altar in the midst of every relationship, like there was in the relationship between Abraham, and his son Isaac. God asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son to him, and Abraham was willing to. We tend to be possessive in our relationships. We need to place the object of our love and affection on the sacrificial altar just like Abraham did, for everything we have is a gift from God. Nothing that is ever given to God is lost. The first relationship should be the one with God. It is on that relationship that all other relationships should be built.

In this episode, Fr. George Panackal speaks about accepting the shortcomings in ourselves and in others. Everyone has shorcomings. It is not something bad. It’s part of God’s divine plan. Acceptance of shortcomings is the first step required in coping with them, whether in ourselves, or in others.

In this episode, Fr. Michael Payyapilly speaks about sin. We are made in God’s own likeness. We are God’s temple; every cell in our bodies is part of that temple. We belong to Him. Just like a parish priest is only the care taker of the parish church, we are only care takers of our bodies. We cannot say: ‘This is our life, our body. We will do what we like with it’. Because our life, our body belongs to God. Its purity and sanctity are ours to guard. Sin is a desecration of God’s temple. Let us eschew the path of sin, and live a life that abides by the law of the Lord.

If you want to make the right choice in life, sit in prayer, says Fr. Michael Payyapilly, continuing from the previous episode. Sit in prayer in the presence of the Lord, and He will instruct you. For the Bible says: “I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” (Psalm 32:8) All you need is faith, and a heart that relates to God.

In life we have to make many decisions – decisions regarding education, career, marital life and many more. We constantly have to choose between good and bad. Often decisions are based on our conscience. What if our conscience is perverted? It is only when our heart is in union with God that we are able to relate to Him and hear His voice. Whenever he had to make a decision, King David would sit in prayer and seek God’s guidance. It is only when we live in His grace that God will speak to us. When Kin Saul strayed away from God, he could not hear his voice. If we live according to His commandments, God will guide us and help us make the right decisions.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only son so that everyone who believes in him may not perish, but may have eternal life (John 3: 16). God’s love for us is unbounded, unconditional. He loves us for what we are, the way we are. We spend our lives trying to be accepted by others even though we know human love and respect is transient. God’s love is eternal. He will never forget us. He will never abandon us.

A wrong decision can impact our entire lives. If we live a life in union with God, the decisions we take will be those that He wants us to take. If we have a heart that relates to God, He will speak to us. When we ask him for an answer, He will provide us one. But if we do not live in His grace, He will not answer us. In John 15, Jesus says: ‘Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me’. Again He says: ‘If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you’.

If you want to make the right choice, sit in prayer, and Jesus will make the choice for you; because in Psalm 32:8 the Lord says: ‘I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go.’ But be warned, says Fr. Michael Payyapilly VC, because when you let God make your choices for you, the world will sideline you. That shouldn’t surprise you, because the Bible says: ‘If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world – therefore the world hates you (John 15:19). But Jesus will be there for you. You will make mistakes. You will fall. The important thing is to keep getting up, keep trying. What matters is not how long you have lived a holy life, but how hard you have tried to live a holy life. You’ve got a God who loves you no matter what. And he’s going to lead you; he’s going to help you get where you ought to. Just trust in Him.

For all problems human faces, there is a hidden project designed by God, we must have proper wisdom from God to reveal his project. If we did lack his wisdom, evil spirit will encounter us. Silence all the sounds of enemy so that only the voice of wisdom will ring clear to our minds. Pray for those who persecute you. Then we become a grate child of God.
